Online dating has been around for a while now. After the introduction of the smartphone, apps have drastically changed. App makers took online dating to a whole new level by coming up with dating apps. These apps are a convenient way for people to connect through their smartphones. Whether for a hookup or a long-term relationship, it’s a powerful tool for people to connect with one another. Long distance relationships are a whole other topic, not the best for dating apps.
You don’t need to spend time on dating apps during the summer of 2018. There are cases where because of someone’s schedule they struggle to meet people near their age. Or people of the opposite sex. For most of us, online dating is an excuse not to put ourselves out there in the real world. People then resort to using cell phone spy apps on their partner. Then they wonder why their relationships aren’t working out.
The problem with dating apps is that it is superficial and impersonal. It’s not that there aren’t success stories or that it can’t work for some people. For the majority of people, it ends up being a way for them to throw their heart out there. It is becoming a way for people to focus more heavily on others looks. Not so much finding love or a relationship. On these apps, you are judging people by their attractiveness as you “swipe left” or “swipe right” on their profiles.
If you ask me, the dating app is a reflection on the hookup culture today. Right or wrong, many people are more concerned about who they are going to take home than who is going to father or mother their children. Many people would say there’s nothing wrong with that, and that’s fine. However, it’s important for people to understand that the modern day dating app represents this part of our culture, so to expect to find Mr. or Mrs. Right on there is a mistake.
The Tinder Phenomenon
The reason that these apps focus so much on hookups is that they are primarily about looks, and that’s not what you build a relationship on. Tinder made the “swipe left” or “swipe right” idea popular. Users are able to judge a person based on looks, in a matter of seconds, and swipe left if they are uninterested or right if they are interested. While this makes the process convenient, it’s not conducive to building lasting, healthy relationships.
Look Into Their Eyes
The best time to get to know someone is when you can look into their eyes. We live in the digital information age, and it’s easy to mistake online interaction with real, personal connection with another human being. The next time you are craving interaction with another human, don’t DM someone on Instagram or text someone, meet up with a friend in person and have a real conversation.
Dating apps aren’t inherently wrong or bad. But for many people, they may just be an easy way out. This process is probably harder for the ladies, who aren’t supposed to ask guys out on a date, according to social norms. That is one area where being on a dating app may allow them to show that they are interested in meeting someone, and it puts them in a position to be met. So, there are certainly positive aspects of dating apps as well. If you enjoyed this, check out my last post about photography tips.
